Feedback during performance reviews is necessary but it should not be the only place and time that feedback is provided. I always made sure that there was regular, informal feedback given to staff so that when they had their review, there were no surprises. This gave them ample opportunity to improve on any issues, and for me to ensure expectations were clarified and proper supports put in place for success. Their success results in the organization’s success so it’s a win win if we set staff up for success and not failure. Regular, informal feedback also opens the door for staff to communicate their needs or questions and results in a healthier working relationship. And when they know what to expect in a performance review, it makes the experience less daunting for everyone. They can actually be a positive experience for both parties.
