I found myself in a pay equity situation some years ago. At a previous employer I resigned from my accounting job duties so I could move full time into payroll. When my replacement was onboarded, I was working in payroll, so I saw their starting salary and was caught off guard to learn the man replacing me was being paid more. I challenged my employer and they said “it was what he was making at his last job”. I tried to have them see that they were perpetuating the wage gap as he was now the highest income earner in the finance department of three other women. They refused to agree or adjust any wages, changing their story every time I pressed. They ended up saying that his claim of having some university education was of more value than the years of experience the three other women in the department held. I find too often there is a justification other than gender for why the pay is higher, resulting in no change. I am optimistic about these new legislations and hope the next generation will receive the benefits.
